Everyday Movement

Families are known to play sports together. The Kennedy’s were avid football players, I suppose the Beckhams, soccer. Naples families go to the beach, swim, sail in the gulf and at local parks, hoola hoop!! Growing up in CT we’d hike, swim, bike, ice skate, ski, dance. To rollerblade feels like flying! Sports require amazing agility, balance, and coordination. Group sports require teamwork and understanding a game plan–the big picture.

Movement is a relief of the regular stuff that settles in, shaking us out of our reverie into an altered state–one we’re not normally in. Usually it evokes pleasure, relief of stress, freedom, camaraderie, relationship to yourself and others and general health and wellbeing. When we decide to move we jump in feet first, arms wide open and let the spirit move us effortlessly. There are many opportunities for moving; The Skate Park, The Zoo, Water Parks, The Botanical Garden and Children’s Garden, Kayaking, Surf Boarding, Tennis, and Golf. Seeing and being in nature is an added bonus. The boardwalk at Freedom Park boasts hundreds of wildlife and flora sightings and seasonal bloomings. It is a special place to share with your family.

Dance halls offer affordable lessons that once learned you take with you everywhere. There are groups that do Dances in the Round which are easy, fun and multicultural. There are also many Yoga centers. Kirtan is a musical yoga experience that utilizes the multiple talents of many local artists inspiring song, music, dance and bliss. Similarly there are local Drum Circles that encourage dance and everyone’s participation. Children particularly love the variety of sound and environment that is stimulating. When events are outside it allows everyone to have as much space as they need to move. These kinds of events stimulate creative energy and community spirit, getting to know your neighbor. There are all kinds of creative people who bring events and parties all over town in every which way. There are even Yoga Clowns popping up, entertaining and enrolling everyone to get moving!
