Week 3 2012

So this week’s blog is about attitude….as you can recall from last week’s blog I took quite a fall. I knew that I had hurt myself pretty badly but maybe was in denial about how bad. I guess my thinking was if I don’t acknowledge that I’m hurt then it will go away….WRONG!!! Wednesday I finally bit the bullet and went to the walk-in clinic and the verdict is a broken wrist and severely sprained collateral ligaments in my knee. I walked out defeated and in a leg brace from mid-thigh to mid-calf and my arm in splint. My first thought was to drive to the nearest McDonalds and drown my tears in a Big Mac #1 meal and a large coke BUT I didn’t! I took a deep breath and thought about the Serenity Prayer (sorry…one religious moment) “accept things I cannot change” (that I fell on my behind and I’m wrapped up like mummy!!! LOL) and “change the things I can!” Ah-ha – that was the moment! What was the one thing I could change–MY ATTITUDE! Yes, I fell and, yes, it will make things harder BUT I have come so far in just a couple weeks. I decided to concentrate on what I did have…I have limbs on my right side that work, I lost 7.5 pounds, I have successfully kicked my sweet tea habit and Coca Cola habit (VERY big deal for me), and I have a wonderful trainer who still believes in me!!!! Setbacks happen every day and I CHOOSE not to let this one deter me or discourage me. The best is yet to come! As I lay here in bed with my leg up and heat on it, all is right with my world tonight! My daughter is laying next to me with her head on my shoulder, I have a wonderful family, a wonderful job, the best friends anyone could ever ask for and I have my spirit and strength which will guide me to success on this wonderful journey ….who could ask for anything more?!

 

Cheryl is learning the art of patience due to the “oops a daisy” injury she had at work two weeks ago. Fortunately, her number one treatment is the R.I.C.E method I mentioned in last week’s blog and TIME. As long as no further strain occurs, time will truly be her friend. She is wearing a brace, perhaps not more than a few weeks, and will see the doctor later this week to evaluate her healing. For now, she can only stick to her diet and walk at a comfortable pace (3.5 – 4.0 mph) on a flat level. However, given her broken wrist, I can’t foresee her doing any upper body routines until she’s cleared by a doctor to pick up light weights. What’s a trainer to do at this point?! KEEP ON MOTIVATING! There is nothing more heartbreaking than a client to experience a self-inflicted setback – whether it be mental, or in Cheryl’s case – physical – and think “What’s it all for now, anyway?!” It’s all for HER, it’s for her long-term well-being, and in many cases, her HAPPINESS to reach her goals! It’s for her daughter to see that “life happens” and you have to do the best you can with what you got – even if 100% has to be in your mind – and attitude! Cheryl can be that example to her daughter, to herself and to others! Every “oops” is an opportunity – period! This too, shall pass…and she’ll be mentally stronger and more anxious to pick up where she left off. For now, she has to ‘wait’ and recognize the positive in her life and the supportive influences that exist in her world! I DO believe in Cheryl and that she will have a more ‘take charge’ attitude when her body is ready – at least I know her mind is already there.
