Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone

Now days we all have become creatures of habit. We all get into a comfort zone and dislike the thought of change for the simple fact that we believe it will cause disorder. Change can present us with improved opportunities in life and it is a must to step out of that comfort zone in order to improve and progress in life.
I have always said that something seems so difficult it must then build character. Fitness for mom’s can seem like an added task to their never ending agenda. This very aspect is where the problem lies. If we have an outlook on exercise as a choir then we will never truly embrace the joy of it and moreover make it a part of our lives permanently.
One problem I see a lot is that women are uncomfortable in the gym or have no experience in the gym. Let’s face it; we are not all athletes and did not spend hours in high school at the gym. So to overcome this obstacle there is nothing better to do than jump right in. You don’t need a partner or a trainer, if you would rather have that then great. Take the steps that will just get you through the door and go from there. In fact if you can do this first simple step without the assistance of anyone else you are already stepping out of that comfort zone and setting yourself up for success.
Now, I’m not saying get a membership; start with a high intensity crossfit circuit that consists of 4 sets of leg press, box jumps and burpees, 5 rounds for time! (Did you get all of that?) NO! I didn’t think so. So if you have never used an elliptical or a stairmaster go and just hop on one of those machines and try it out. One small step at a time and you will grow into a confident person in the gym.
I personally know someone that doesn’t want to go to the gym because she will look out of place. She is not what would be considered an athletic and doesn’t know too much about the gym equipment so she. She feels as though she will be embarrassed by her peers in the gym. Well let me tell you something; there is always someone in the gym in far worse shape than you and most true athletes do not pay any attention to others around them at the gym. These people have made the gym a comfort zone for them. At one point we all had to learn and have all been there. Try to focus on yourself! Why your there, what changes will be made because of your actions.
Pick a form of activity that you think you will be most comfortable with at first. If you like swimming; then go swim a few laps at the gym. If you enjoy the outdoors; find a trail to walk a few days a week but this doesn’t give you an excuse to not step through that door at the gym and make a change. The point is to get up and do it. You may feel scared or concerned about how others look at you but realize you are doing this for you! By stepping out of that comfort zone you build self confidence and make a positive change for the future. Hey you may even consider yourself an athlete someday.
