Making Time For Fitness During The Holidays

Well here we are in the midst of another holiday season filled with family, shopping and the dreaded food. This time of the year is quite stressful for many families and we all have a lot on our plates. It is important not to forget to take some time for ourselves and focus on getting in our daily exercise; doing this will help relieve stress and help you avoid the dreadful winter weight gain. Regular exercise during these times will reduce your cortisol levels which in turn; will minimize abdominal fat gain.Make it a point to set at the very least 30 minutes per day to get some exercise in. A great way to do this is when the family is in from out of town. You can get them a day pass at your local gym. Invite your siblings, aunts, parents to join you for a group exercise class that you may enjoy. One thing I like to do is pack some healthy snacks and set out for a day of Christmas shopping. Yes, shopping all day is exhausting but fun and you stay active all day.
Exercise during these months of winter slows down for many people and most get started at the beginning of the year. Oh the ‘good ol’ New Year’s resolution we all have! Why not start today and feel better tomorrow? Start now and you will get ahead of the New Year. I am a busy single mom and will be the first to admit that it is tough to even fit in an hour in the gym but I know that it is not an option and I somehow always get it done. I always feel better afterwards! Just focus on the benefits and how great you will feel when it is out of the way and you can focus on your daily tasks.

Unfortunately, my schedule can be very busy and the only time I can exercise is early morning before my daughter even wakes up. I’m not much of the morning person, but once I’m up and at the gym it energizes the rest of my day. Early morning cardio is also the best for fat loss, so my physique reaps the benefits of doing this.

In conclusion, during the busy holidays give yourself some time and the others around you will benefit from your positive energy you bring around. Your family and friends can get involved in pursuing a more active lifestyle especially at this time of the year when we are bombarded with pies, desserts, breads and drinks. Get your loved ones involved and make it fun! This will bring you one step closer to reaching that new years resolution without even trying.

  1. Great advice! My husband & I took his 70-yr old mother to the gym on Black Friday. She had never ventured into the free weight area, and we had a blast teaching her how to ‘pump iron’! She felt so empowered as well, discovering that she was stronger than she knew!
