Play Therapy Helps Children Communicate Feelings

play therapyChildren express emotions and communicate through play. It is fun for them. Children learn a lot through play such as self-expression, creativity, exploration, how to combat boredom, and connects them to others in a positive manner. Sitting in a chair, sharing their feelings, and expressing emotions through talk therapy can be a difficult task for children. Play therapy provides a safe, familiar form of communication between a child and his therapist.

By the time a child is being seen in a therapist’s office he has exhausted all known coping methods. The ultimate goal of play therapy is to help the child cope with behavioral and emotional problems that interfere with daily life. Through the use of toys, he can “tell” the therapist his troubles. The therapist can then evaluate by noticing any patterns or how a toy is involved in the playtime.

Many types of psychological issues can be addressed by utilizing play therapy. Most of these behaviors and issues prompt parents to seek out the help of a psychotherapist because they have elevated to a severe level. The longevity of the behaviors is an important factor in deciding to visit a therapist. Reasons that are effectively treated through play therapy include anxieties, aggressive behavior, difficulty sleeping and nightmares, temper tantrums, those who experience physical or sexual abuse, have experienced a loss in the family, neglect, family transitions such as divorce, and many other topics. The majority of children that benefit from this modality are between the ages of 3 – 12 yrs. old, although it also can help mentally disabled adults.
