The Obstacle is the Path

images

There is a Zen proverb I love that says “the obstacle is the path.” When I was in my teacher training with Baron Baptiste, he would often say, “That which blocks your path is your path,” which essentially means the same thing. This is a worthy concept to consider, and I've been reminding my students, and myself, of it quite often. In yoga class and in life, we encounter many obstacles. On our path to happiness, or losing ten pounds, or a more peaceful relationship with our family - whatever we are seeking - we all encounter blocks along the way. We keep getting smacked in the head with our … [Read more...]

2012 Week 8

weight loss

This week was rather interesting as Cheryl took her ‘first’ little vacation away from her daily environment and routine by traveling from Florida to Illinois for the weekend. Now, the funny thing is that she didn’t tell me so when I was trying to reach her Friday for our weekly ‘check in’ and didn’t get ANY reply until Sunday--my imagination was all over the place, lol. See, being a trainer from far-away canNOT mean that being out of sight is ‘out of mind’, if anything I often feel more focused on someone that I don’t see. It’s extra work on my end to ensure they get the right results, but so … [Read more...]

2012 Week 7

Cheryl has experienced what I believe to be a few key “Ah-Ha” moments this past week…1) Persistency AND patience pays off—big time, 2) Dieting and exercising are a part of a healthy lifestyle – not a quick fix for a single event and 3) Even a little bit of help can go a long way and make an important difference in someone’s health and fitness goals. We’re 7 weeks into the 12 week process. Cheryl not only experienced a set back from a self-inflicted injury which took her about 2 weeks out of the gym, she overcame the frustration of that setback, is 12 pounds less on the scale, feeling more … [Read more...]

2012 Week 6

This week’s blog is about "coming back to life"....I’m not gonna lie, the only part of my body that is not sore are my fingers (thankfully because I have to type this wonderful blog!!! LOL). This week I finally got clearance from my doctor to work out again (thank God!!!).  I was given a new food plan by my ever patient and wonderful trainer, Angela. And I am loving it because I get to eat watermelon...it’s the little things that please me!  This week has been challenging workout-wise. My wrist is feeling pretty good but my knee is still not too pleased with her klutzy owner!!! I’ve completed … [Read more...]

Soda consumption is putting your health at risk

soda

Love this quote: "Change before you have to. Jack Welch" As part of the IFIT FOR LIFE's action steps for a healthier lifestyle; we’re going to outline facts about drinking sodas. Sodas are artificial colored, artificially sweetened, and full of empty sweet calories made from high fructose corn syrup. There are numerous studies that indicate the negative health impact of sodas.  The Childhood Obesity Research Center at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine did a study demonstrating findings of higher than normal levels of fructose in numerous brand name sodas. … [Read more...]

2012 Weeks 4 & 5

patience

This week I was trying to collect my thoughts on what to blog about and the words kept escaping me. This is not a position I often find myself in (just ask my closest friends...LOL). Maybe it’s because I’m not allowed to do hardly ANYTHING!!!!! No lifting weights, cardio (ok, yes, walk on treadmill at speeds that I can even hear the treadmill saying, "Are you kidding me????" Sorry, I digress...I’ll put the hats and horns away because that was the extent of my pity party for the week. As you may have guessed I’m still on the mend. Every time I tried to test my knee this week my body has … [Read more...]

Effects of nutrition on mental health

brain health

Did you watch the movie “SUPER SIZE ME”? Granted, what Morgan Spurlock did to himself might have been a little extreme. On the other hand, it emphasizes how detrimental a diet deficient in micronutrients is not only for our physical but mental health. For those of you who have not seen it yet, the protagonist ate fast food exclusively for 30 days. By merely the end of a month he displayed signs of depression apart from more obvious physical health issues. Health Psychology is a burgeoning field in modern clinical psychology. It stresses the importance of a healthy lifestyle, particularly … [Read more...]

Hydration and the Elderly

elderly water

Water, it’s the most essential chemical substances for life. We could not survive without this clear, odorless and tasteless (1) nutrient within a matter of days. Water is regulated by the kidneys, and therefore drinking plenty of water on a daily basis will protect these two vital organs. However, as the healthy kidneys age, they will function normal but slower. The kidney’s function decrease due to physiological changes such as the reduction of the number of filtering units (the nephrons) which filter waste from the blood, and a decrease in the kidneys tissue and blood supply (2).  In … [Read more...]
