Healthy eating into the holidays!

friends at a restaurant

We are coming up on the wonderful but often dreaded holiday season when it comes to weight struggles.  With holiday parties, big family meals, and food gifts it is hard not to put on that typical 5-10 pounds over the holidays. Going into Thanksgiving, remember that it is ONE meal on ONE day.  Thanksgiving should not last all week long as far as your eating is concerned.  Leftovers are great and I suggest using them, but be conscious of the leftovers that you choose.  You can use leftover turkey and vegetables to create a great meal.  Apple pie…not so much! If you decide to treat yourself, … [Read more...]

Family Fitness – What’s in it for me?

I've always been an active person.  And 20 years ago, when I was a kid, we played outside.  We played tag, hide and go seek, baseball/softball, kickball, etc.  Unfortunately, kids don't play outside like they used to.  When I was in school, we had excellent physical education programs...unfortunately, it seems as if schools don't have the budget to provide good physical education for the students. Families are becoming more and more disconnected.  Both parents are working to pay the bills and provide for their families.  There is less time to cook, and families are looking to fast food … [Read more...]

My Passion for Fitness

Fitness is such a huge part of my life and is a passion of mine. I believe that overall health and fitness are such important elements to complete happiness. Many families today have so many daily tasks that exercise and family nutrition gets put aside, and is not a top priority. This one fact is what has given me the passion to change everyday families’ outlook on this important concept. I myself have been guilty of this until I discovered what an immense difference eating a clean diet and getting daily exercise in could do for me and my family. I realized I became a better spouse, parent, … [Read more...]

Beyond Physical Health

Like many of my colleagues, some natural skills led me to the mental health field, including being a good listener, having a positive outlook, and maintaining faith in the ability to heal.  My training in social work at the undergraduate and graduate level gave those natural skills a purpose and built my solid foundation in a systems approach to helping people.  As a therapist, most of my adult clients enter counseling with goals related to a desire to feel better emotionally or overcome difficulties.  Parents also bring their children to therapy with similar goals (though sometimes the … [Read more...]

[Read more...]
